Defenses against the Wrist Grab
1.
The Attacker initiates by grabbing the defender's wrist on the same side of his body.  The defender opens his hand
and circles towards the attacker's thumb.
2. The attacker initiates by grabbing the defender's wrist on the opposite side of his body.  The defender opens his
hand and circles towards attackers thumb.
3. The attacker initiates by grabbing one of the defender's wrists with two hands.  The defender adopts a good
mountain stance and makes a fist with his trapped hand, ensuring that the thumb is pointed upward.  Grabbing his fist
with his other hand, the defender removes his trapped arm by pulling over his shoulder.
4. The attacker initiates by grabbing both the defender's wrists.  The defender opens his hand and circles towards the
attacker's thumbs, his hands moving simultaneously and pulling downward.

Defenses against the Hair Grab
1.
The attacker initiates by grabbing the defender's hair from the front.  Both hands trap the attacker's hand.  Pressing
the hand flat, the defender shows a strike, and then pushes the hand off his head.
2. The attacker initiates by grabbing the defender's hair from the front.  The defender takes hold of the hand by the
meat of the palm, stationing his other hand nearby.  The defender shows a strike with a kick and then peels the hand
off, ending in a wristlock with both thumbs pushing the attacker's hand toward his wrist.
3. The attacker initiates by grabbing the defender's hair from behind.  The defender reaches back, taking hold of the
attacker, and pulls himself behind, pushing the hand toward the shoulder in a submission.
4. The attacker initiates by grabbing the defender's hair from behind.  The defender reaches back, taking hold of the
attacker, and pulls himself backwards.  Once he clears the arm, he uses his forearm to drive the attacker to the ground.

Defenses against the Chest Grab
1.
The attacker initiates by grabbing the defender's chest with a single hand in an attempt to pull him away.  The
defender steps back into an application back stance, and places one hand on either side of the attacker's wrist.
Pushing away in rapid succession, the defender removes the hand from his lapel.
2. The attacker initiates by grabbing the defender's chest with a single hand and raising another in a clenched fist.  The
defender moves to the side, stopping the arm with a hand to the bicep, and sweeps the attacker's lead leg with his back.
3. The attacker initiates by grabbing the defender's chest with two hands.  The defender snakes an arm between the
attacker's wrists, grasping his hand on the other side.  Using his body, he pulls his clenched fist back the way it came.
4.  The attacker initiates by grabbing the defender's chest with two hands.  The defender reaches over the attacker's
arms, grabbing one of his hands by the meat of the palm.  Turning the hand over, he swings his other arm over his
opponent's, forcing his body lower than his hand.  The defender finishes by bending the hand towards the attacker's
wrist.

Defenses against the Shoulder Grab
1.
The attacker initiates by grabbing the defender's opposite shoulder.  The defender responds by raising the arm and
turning toward the attacker, snaking his arm over and under the attacker's elbow.  Cranking the shoulder, he submits
the attacker.
2. The attacker initiates by grabbing the defender's same-side shoulder.  The defender responds by raising the arm
and turning toward the attacker, grabbing the wrist and breaking the elbow with his forearm.

Defenses against the Headlock
1.
The attacker initiates by holding the defender in a headlock.  The defender stops the choke, shows a  strike with his
free hand, and reaches up to grab just below the attacker's nose.  The defender takes the attacker to the ground by
pushing his head back and making a shelf with his leg.
2.  The attacker initiates by holding the defender in a headlock.  The defender stops the choke, shows a strike with his
free hand, and reaches around to grab the attacker's far arm.  Using his chest, the defender pries the attacker's hands
apart and finishes by touching the attacker's hand to his shoulder.
3. The attacker initiates by holding the defender in a headlock.  The defender immediately tucks his chin and reaches
down to grab the bottom of the attacker's pant legs.  Pushing with his shoulder, the defender drives the attacker to the
ground.
4. The attacker initiates by holding the defender in a headlock.  The defender immediately tucks his chin and angles his
body, reaching back and grabbing the attacker's shoulder.  Tucking his other hand under the attacker's knee, the
defender sits back, rolling to the attacker's side and finishing with a side choke.

Defenses against the Bear Hug
1.
The attacker initiates with a bear hug over the defender's arms.  The defender drops into a horseback-riding stance
and shoots his arms forward, following up with elbows.  The defender steps behind the attacker and trips him over his
knee.
2. The attacker initiates with a bear hug under the defenders arms, clasped with interlaced fingers.  The defender
responds by peeling off a finger, preferably the middle finger, and bends it toward the attacker's arm.
3. The attacker initiates with a bear hug under the defenders arms, hands clasping wrist.  The defender traps the
attacker's free arm, pushing the hand down towards the wrist and turning out to finish with a hammerlock.
4. The attacker initiates with a bear hug over the defenders arms, attempting to pick him up.  The defender pulls himself
to the ground with his legs, showing a strike to release the hold.  Throwing his hands forward, the defender frees
himself fully, reaching down to grab the attacker's exposed leg and pulling it out from under him.

Defenses against the Front Choke
1.
The attacker initiates with a choke from the front, arms straight.  The defender lurches backwards, pulling his head
back, while, simultaneously, pushing his hands forward on the attacker's wrists.
2. The attacker initiates with a choke from the front, arms bent.  The defender bobs his head forward, descending
between the attacker's arms and coming up on the side.

Defenses against the Rear Choke
1.
The attacker initiates with a choke from behind.  Before the attacker can achieve a full grip, the defender steps out
and sweeps his leg.
2. The attacker gains a choke from behind or follows after the defender as he moves to the side.  The defender drops
his hips and throws the attacker over his shoulder with a hip throw.
3. The attacker achieves a full rear choke.  The defender reaches back with one hand, pulling the attackers arm
forward and breaking the elbow over his shoulder with two hands.
4. The attacker initiates with a choke from behind.  Before the attacker can achieve the choke, the defender pins the
arm to his chest, reaching his free hand back and showing a strike to the groin.  The defender then executes a fireman
takedown.

Defenses against the Guillotine
1.
The attacker initiates with a guillotine choke.  The defender stops the choke, showing a strike to the groin, and, in the
same motion, reaches up to coil an arm around the attacker's neck.  Pushing the attacker's arm off, the defender raises
his body, completing a guillotine choke of his own.
2. The attacker initiates with a guillotine choke.  The defender stops the choke, shows a strike to the groin, and reaches
across the attacker's body to grab his far arm.  Prying with his body, he breaks the grip and submits the attacker by
touching the hand to the shoulder.

Defenses against the Nelson
1.
The attacker initiates with a nelson.  Before the attacker can succeed in getting a grip, the defender traps the arms
at his side.  Stepping behind the attacker, the defender grabs the attacker's legs and throws him over his shoulder.
2. The attacker initiates with a nelson and succeeds in interlocking his fingers.  The defender begins by prying a finger
free.  Pulling the hand down to his side, the defender finishes the attacker with a figure-four arm lock.
