Students must read a book on martial arts philosophy and write a paper. Some suggestions include: Zen in the Martial
Arts by Joe Hyams, Be like Water by Joseph Cardillo, Tao of Jeet Kune Do by Bruce Lee, Budo Mind and Body by
Nicklaus Suino, Samurai Strategies by Boye Lafayette De Mente, Dojo Wisdom by Jennifer Lawler, Martial Arts
Teaching Tales by Pascal Fauliot, The Twenty Guiding Principles of Karate by Gichin Funakoshi, and Kodo Ancient
Ways by Kensho Furuya.
Students should explain what they learned from the book. They may comment on what stood out to them, both good
and bad, and what they personally connected with.
The paper should be at least a page long, be single-spaced, and have 12-point, Arial or Times New Goman font.
